Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)
INCLUSION
At The Welldon Park Academy we believe that all children regardless of their starting points, gender, race, ethnicity, needs, should and are entitled to support, challenge and stretch. We believe that every child should feel that they can succeed in their classroom and beyond; everyone feels valued.
We understand that some children may need more to help them succeed and work to the best of their abilities. This section provides additional resources to help your child continue to access learning and strive to success!
Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)
All children may experience some difficulties in learning during their school life. At The Welldon Park Academy, we believe in providing equal opportunities and access to the curriculum for all children including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
We aim to ensure that children with SEND at TWPA make good progress and achieve in line with other schools nationally. We work to ensure an inclusive environment, working with parents, the child and outside agencies. We work hard to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made to overcome barriers to learning. We have good relationships with outside agencies (including Educational Psychology Service), who assess children and advise parents and schools.
We follow the London Borough of Harrow Guidelines for Learning Support in line with the National Code of Practice for the identification and assessment of Special Educational Needs.
As a school, we understand the importance of identifying pupils with additional needs as early as possible, therefore ensuring we can tailor the curriculum to accommodate individual needs and allow maximum access to the curriculum, through appropriate adjustments and support. This support may be through in-house support, or sought from an external agency.
The Harrow Local Offer
Local Authorities and schools are required to publish and keep under review information about services they expect to be available for the children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities (SEND) aged 0-25. This is known as the ‘Local Offer’.
The Local Offer is a resource for parents in understanding the range of services and provision in the local area. Information is published as part of the SEND reforms under the Children and Families Act 2014.
English as an Additional Language
At The Welldon Park Academy, we value the range of cultures, languages and experiences of our children. We respect each other's differences and create a curriculum that values each of these. Our aim for children with EAL is to support them in accessing the curriculum in order to develop their English language, provide an inclusive learning environment to in turn support them in striving to success.
New arrivals to the school have an induction with support and a buddy system is set up to support the children in establishing routines and relationships and to settle quickly.
