Reading at The Welldon Park Academy

At the Welldon Park Academy we believe reading is key to academic success. Readers drive their own learning and increase their vocabulary and knowledge. Making sure that children become engaged with reading, continually improve their reading skills and maintain a love for reading is therefore one of the most important ways to makes a difference to their life chances, whatever their background.

We use the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme created by Ruth Miskin throughout every child’s learning journey to ensure we have fidelity to our reading scheme. In the early stages of reading we use RWI Phonics to teach children letter sounds and how to blend them together to read and write words. Children work through the different sets, learning and developing their phonics sounds and knowledge until they become confident ‘free readers’. In KS2 we provide this same rigour by using the Literacy and Language scheme and the RWI program that compliment each other.

Teachers draw upon observations and continuous approved assessment tools to ensure children are stretched and challenged and achieve wherever they at.

“Teach a child to read and keep that child reading and we will change everything.

And I mean everything.” Jeanette Winterson.
